Animations: Critical Thinking

Bridge8 cowrote produced, animated and directed a series of six critical thinking animations for TechNyou, an emerging technologies public information resource funded by the Australian Government Department of Industry, Innovation, Science, Research and Tertiary Education (DIISRTE).

It forms part of an education resource which covers basic logic, faulty arguments and the developing critical thinking skills. It’s designed for secondary school years 8-10  (that’s 12-15 year olds, but is just as appropriate for a general adult audience) and focuses on science issues.     I loved these up to the last one, and am left wondering of the logic behind saying that evolution as a theory is “well tested”. What sort of tests are we talking about? That is rather different to saying that it seems to account for observations.

    • There could be an argument made that the theory of evolution has more supporting evidence than any other scientific theory ever proposed. Because it is so contentious, people have spent a lot of time testing and re-testing it. Though the theory has changed from Darwin’s original “Origin”, the modern synthesis still maintains that differential reproduction and survival through natural selection is the driving force behind evolution.

      Every field of biology has provided evidence in support of the theory of evolution through the process of natural selection. This includes, but is not limited to: genetics, ecology, animal and plant physiology, comparative anatomy, cell biology and biochemistry, and paleontology. A simple Google search will fill much of your time, and will follow the kind of logic found in the videos above. Above all else, I would recommend that you pick up a reprint of the first edition of Charles Darwin’s ‘On The Origin of Species’ – a better written, clearer, or more logical argument would be difficult to find in nearly any discipline.

      Evolution has been directly observed in modern insects, bacteria and plants (and likely more – these are just the ones that come to mind). The fossil record and the fields above have provided many more observations of the process at play.

        Thanks, that was helpful. I think of testing as meaning repeated controlled experiments (is that too narrow?) I can see from the link that there are a few instances of that kind of testing, which have shown evolution on a very small scale, although arguably illustrating speciation. I still think it is rather a leap from that to saying it has been “well tested” in the context of a mechanism for creating the diversity of known life.

It bothers me you have developed such a nice / logical piece of media and load it with a reenforcing fallacy like global warming and since the connotation is that there is “warming” is false and has been shown to be so by ALL the evidence for over the last 10 years from all sources now that they have been truly pear reviewed and not based on the “hockey stick” camps work. How do you justify this logically?

    • Logic: You may want to look up the definition of “run on sentence” in your dictionary, then re-phrase your question.
